Top chats from the Fulbright Taiwan ChatGPT LabHow 21 Fulbright scholars teaching across Taiwan use ChatGPT for lesson planning, translating language and cultural context, and adapting to life abroadI began using ChatGPT on its release in 2022 during a break midway through my undergraduate studies while working at the U.S. House of Representatives, where I built and managed a communications program for a congressional office. Even in its early stages, I remember being impressed by ChatGPT’s ability to elevate my work: often text-heavy, high-stakes speeches, press releases, and other copy. I didn’t have to worry about things like typos quite as much as before. When I returned to school in 2023 and ChatGPT improved, I learned how to leverage it. I found new and interesting ways to use it to improve all aspects of my life. I used it to learn new coding languages, improve deliverables for my freelance consulting business, serve as a mock defense panel for my thesis project, and boil down what I wanted to do during the early stages of my career. No longer was it a tool on the belt; it was the whole toolbox. As I continued to grow with ChatGPT, I noticed that many of my peers either used it only to summarize PDFs or simply did not use it at all. I wanted to close this gap, and when I won a Fulbright scholarship, it felt like an opportunity to start the conversation. Over six weeks, I organized a group of 20 other Fulbright recipients from across the United States — teaching across six counties in Taiwanese elementary, middle, and high schools — to meet regularly and share specific examples of how we use ChatGPT. We challenged ourselves to try it in new ways, inspired by my work and experience with the first ChatGPT Lab earlier this year. After six meetings, we identified nine top chats that capture how we use ChatGPT for lesson planning and how we use it to translate language and cultural context, plus adapt to life abroad.
